Etymology

Abbreviation of ジャガタラ (jagatara) +‎ (imo, potato).

ジャガタラ is a corruption of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch Djakarta, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Indonesian Jakarta, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Javanese jayakarta (victorious deed, complete act, complete victory).

The potato was first introduced to Japan via the Dutch East Indies, hence the Jakarta connection.[1][2]
