Etymology

Short for チャリンコ (charinko).

Occasionally explained as a shortening of チャリオット (chariotto) from English chariot, from the sense of two-wheeled vehicle. However, this appears to be a folk etymology.

Ultimate derivation unknown. See チャリンコ for details.
