The meaning of しん (shin) is debated. Theories include:

  1. is an ateji (当て字); the 15th century Ainōshō ((deprecated template usage) 壒嚢鈔) says that it is derived from 四繞 (shinyō, literally four-nyō) since is written with 4 strokes.[1]
  2. Kenji Emori ((deprecated template usage) 江守賢治) suggests that it is from (shin), i.e. "the nyō of ".[1]
  3. Euphonic sound change (音便) from (shi) to (shin).[2]
