Etymology

Compound of 天道虫(テントウムシ) (tentō-mushi, ladybird, ladybug) + (だま) (damashi, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of (だま) (damasu), "to deceive"). The kanji compound is jukujikun (熟字訓), borrowed from Chinese 偽瓢蟲, literally, "imitation ladybird". (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
