U+AB4D, ꭍ
LATIN SMALL LETTER BASELINE ESH

[U+AB4C]
Latin Extended-E
[U+AB4E]

Translingual[edit]

Symbol[edit]

  1. (Teuthonista) Used in digraphs to indicate sibilants between lenis (voiced) [s] and fortis [ſ], the latter of which takes a descending tail like ʃ in italic typeface.

Usage notes[edit]

This symbol contrasts with esh in not having a descender. Not all sources use it; some restrict themselves to diacritics on ⟨s⟩ and ⟨ſ ⟩ (IPA [z] and [s]) for the distinction, or use the alternative series ⟨z s σ ß⟩ (IPA [z z̥ s̬ s]).

Baseline and standard long S in italic typeface.
