Noun[edit]

가재미 (gajaemi)

  1. (Gangwon, Seoul, Gyeongsang, Jeolla dialect, Chungcheong) Dialectal form of 가자미 (gajami, flatfish, flounder)

Usage notes[edit]

The Standard South Korean term for the flounder or flatfish is 가자미 (gajami). In many regional dialects, however, the fish is known as 가재미 (gajaemi), a phonological change due to a process of I-mutation, similar to the change between 호랑이 (horang'i, “tiger”) and 호랭이 (horaeng'i), or 지팡이 (jipang'i, “stick”) and 지팽이 (jipaeng'i).
