First attested in the Samgang haengsildo (三綱行實圖 / 삼강행실도), c. 1460, as Middle Korean 개욤나모 (Yale: kayyom-namwo).

By surface analysis, 개암 (gaeam, hazelnut) +‎ 나무 (namu, tree).
