Etymology
First attested in the "Shingan Guhwangchalyo" 新刊救荒撮要 (신간구황촬요), 1660, as ᄆᆡ오 (mᆡo), combination of ᄆᆡᆸ (mᆡp) + suffix -오 (o) After the mid-15th century, ㅸ (ㅸ) changed to ㅗ (o), ㅜ (u) in front of a vowel other than ㅣ (i). See also 맵다 (maepda) and ㅸ (ㅸ).
