Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 모ᄌᆞ라다 (Yale: mwocolata). Probably a compound of Middle Korean (Yale: mwot) (modern (mot)) and ᄌᆞ라다 (Yale: colata) (modern 자라다 (jarada)).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈmo̞(ː)d͡ʑa̠ɾa̠da̠]
  • Phonetic hangeul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescriptive in Standard Korean, the great majority of speakers (in both Koreas) no longer distinguish vowel length.
