Etymology
[edit]First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 바ᇰ〯긔〮 (Yale: pǎngkúy).
Nativisation of the Sino-Korean term 방기 (放氣, banggi, “releasing gas”). Possibly influenced by 뀌— (kkwi-, “to break, to release (wind)”).
