Etymology

(bae, “stomach, belly”) + 고프다 (gopeuda, “hungry”). First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄇᆡ골ᄑᆞ다 (Yale: poykwolphota).
