First attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean ᄲᅡᆷ (Yale: spam). Also attested in the Bak Tongsa eonhae (朴通事諺解 / 박통사언해), 1677. as ᄲᅣᆷ (spyam), direct origin of the standard form. Compare dialectal forms (byam, Central/Gangwon), (ppam, Hengyeong/Jeolla/Gyeongnam), (ppaem, Gyeongbuk/Chungbuk), etc. and Jeju 삐얌 (ppiyam).[1]
