Doubled (bieup)

  1. A jamo (letter) of the alphabet of the Korean writing system, hangeul.
In North Korea, ㅃ is called 된비읍 (doenbieup), "strong ㅂ (bieup)" and is the seventeenth jamo. In South Korea, it is called 쌍비읍 (ssangbieup), "doubled ㅂ (bieup)" and is the ninth jamo.
ㅃ is pronounced as an bilabial plosive with tense phonation (IPA: [p͈] or [b̬]), i.e. similar to the English p, but with a stiff tongue and glottal opening.
