Etymology[edit]
제 (je, short for 제기랄 (jegiral, “incest”)) + ㄴ장 (njang, short for 난장(亂杖) (nanjang, “torture by beating”)). Originally, it is a contracted form of 젠장맞을 or 젠장칠.

- Phonetic hangul: [젠(ː)장]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
