First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄒᆡ〮도디〮 (Yale: hóy-twòtí), equivalent to (hae, sun) +‎ (dot, to rise) +‎ (-i, noun-deriving suffix).
