Gothic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From π…πŒ΄πŒΉπŒ½ (wein, β€œwine”), with an unclear second element forming the adjective. KΓΆbler suggests *π…πŒ΄πŒΉπŒ½πŒ°πŒ²πƒ (*weinags) as the proper reconstruction; that is, π…πŒ΄πŒΉπŒ½ (wein) + -πŒ°πŒ²πƒ (-ags). The suffix may also have been the related -πŒ°πŒ·πƒ (-ahs). (The fact that the only two attestations are from the same manuscript, Codex Ambrosianus B, makes comparison with other scribes impossible.) This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
