From Proto-Germanic *windaz, from Proto-Indo-European *hโ‚‚wรฉhโ‚nฬฅts (โ€œblowingโ€), present participle of *hโ‚‚wehโ‚- (โ€œto blowโ€). Cognate with Old English wind, Latin ventus (โ€œwindโ€), Ancient Greek แผ„ฮทฮผฮน (รกฤ“mi, โ€œI blowโ€), Old Church Slavonic ะฒัฃั‚ั€ัŠ (vฤ›trลญ, โ€œwindโ€).
