From Proto-Iranian *Hyajnáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hyaȷ́nás, from Proto-Indo-European *Hyeh₂ǵ- (“to sacrifice, worship”), whence the verbal root 𐬫𐬀𐬰 (yaz-, “to worship, to honor, to venerate”). Cognate with Sanskrit यज्ञ (yajñá).
