From Proto-Turkic *ạ̄č (hungry, hunger). The verb is from homophonous Proto-Turkic *ạ̄č- (to hunger). Cognate with Karakhanid ااجْماقْ (āčmaq, to hunger), Bashkir ас (as, hungry), Turkish (hungry), Yakut аас (aas, hungry).
