From Proto-Turkic *yāĺ (young, fresh; vegetables). Cognate with Old Uyghur yʾš (yaš, fresh, moist), Karakhanid ياشْ(yāš, fresh, vegetable), Turkish yaş (fresh, wet, moist), Turkmen ýāş (young).
