Thought to be a borrowing from an unknown source. Cognate to Turkish ka臒an (khagan), and Mongolian 釥牋釥牋釥 (qa桑an, king, khan), a Turkic borrowing. Compare also Turkish h膩k膩n, an early Arabicized form from Arabic 禺丕賯丕賳 (岣的乹膩n).
