Thought to be a borrowing from an unknown source. Cognate to Turkish kağan (“khagan”), and Mongolian ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣan, “king, khan”), a Turkic borrowing. Compare also Turkish hākān, an early Arabicized form from Arabic خاقان (ḵāqān).
