[edit]From Proto-Turkic *yōl (“road, way”). Cognate with Chuvash ҫул (śul), Old Turkic 𐰖𐰆𐰞 (yol), Yakut суол (suol) and Turkish yol.
The sense luck is a semantic loan from Mongolic *jol (“luck”).
