Translingual[edit]

Etymology[edit]

was used in this meaning as early as 1901 in William Allen Whitworth's Choice and Chance with One Thousand Exercises. The symbol came either from English expectation (or expected value), German Erwartungswert or from French espérance (hope); "mathematical hope" was an early name for this concept, still used in French and recognised in some other languages.
