Borrowed from Old Anatolian Turkish, being a compound of شاه (shah) +‎ Old Anatolian Turkish قلی (the possessed form of قل (slave)), literally slave of the Shah; compare Azerbaijani Şahqulu, Chagatai شاه‌قلی, Turkish Şahkulu.
