Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *(H)rewH- (“to tear out, dig out”). Cognate with Latin rūmor (“noise”), raucus.
Within the context of sound (speaking and listening) it gathers the connotation of "to shout, roar" and hence the meanings in Sanskrit and Latin, while some other languages take the physical connotation instead.
