Etymology

According to Chirikba, from Old Georgian აფხაზი (apxazi), from Mingrelian აფხაზა (apxaza), from *აბღაზა (*abɣaza), from *აბაზღა (*abazɣa) with a metathesis, from the plural of the Abkhaz *абазӷа (*abazğa).[1]

Borrowed from Georgian აფხაზი (apxazi). Derived from Abkhaz *абазӷа (*abazğa).

Usage note

  • This term came into use after the opening of the border between Georgia and Turkey, when it became possible to cross into Abkhazia. Previously, the Laz generally did not distinguish between Abkhaz and Abaza.
