Etymology

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 사ᄅᆞ잡다 (Yale: salocapta). From 살— (sal-, “to be alive”) + ᄋᆞ (o, epenthesis) + 잡— (jap-, “to hold, to seize”) + —다 (-da).
