Etymology

Metanalyzed suffix, formed by analogy to verbs from nominal stems in -αδ-, -αγ- with *-yéti suffix added. Compare -ίζω (-ízō).

  1. Used to form verbs from nouns, adjectives, and other verbs.
  2. Added to verb stems to create a frequentative form.
    ῥῑ́πτω (rhī́ptō, throw) + ‎-άζω (-ázō) → ‎ῥῑπτᾰ́ζω (rhīptázō, throw around)
