Borrowed from Persian ـستان, from Middle Persian -stʾn', from Old Persian 𐎿𐎫𐎠𐎴 (s-t-a-n /⁠stāna-⁠/), from Proto-Iranian *stāna-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sthāna, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (to stand).
