Inherited from Dutch -zaam, from Middle Dutch -sam, from Old Dutch -sam, from Proto-Germanic *-samaz, from *samaz (same). Cognate with English -some, German -sam, Old Norse -samr.

    selde (rarely) + ‎-saam → ‎seldsaam (rare)
    spraak (speech) + ‎-saam → ‎spraaksaam (talkative)
