Etymology[edit]

Perhaps from Persian خانه (xâne, house), from Proto-Iranian *wāhana (habitation), derived from *Hwah- (to dwell, remain), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwas- (to dwell, inhabit; to stay a night), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes- (to dwell, live, reside; to stay, spend the night).

  1. Used to form nouns indicating buildings
    sêwî (orphan) + ‎-xane → ‎sêwîxane (orphanage)
  2. Used to form nouns indicating rooms
    xew (sleep) + ‎-xane → ‎xewxane (bedroom)
