Etymology
An Iranian borrowing: compare Parthian 𐭀𐭅𐭀𐭓 (ʾwʾr), Middle Persian 𐭀𐭃𐭀𐭋𐭉 (ʾdʾly, “booty, plunder”), Pashto اوار (avār, “plunder, spoil, prey, booty, pillage”), Classical Mandaic ࡀࡅࡀࡓ (ʾwʾr /ā̆vār/, “plundering”) (from Iranian), Georgian ავარი (avari), იავარი (iavari) (from Iranian), ultimately from Proto-Iranian *HwarH- (“to pluck, tear out; to rob, plunder”).
