Etymology
Uncertain, but perhaps borrowed from pēnis (“tail, penis”) and influenced by cognate *pentul (“tail, penis; bush”), if not a back-formation. Possible cognate with Proto-Germanic *faslaz (“offspring”), whence Old English fæsl, Old High German fasal, Old Norse fösull.
