Proto-Celtic
Etymology
Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *g⁽ʷ⁾ówH-d⁽ʰ⁾-i-s ~ *g⁽ʷ⁾uH-d⁽ʰ⁾-éy-s, from *g⁽ʷ⁾ewH- (“to gain”) + *-is, cognate with Latvian gaut (“to catch, gain”), gūvejs (“winner”), Lithuanian gáuti (“to gain, obtain”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
