[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(s/z)a-j (“earth, sand, soil”). Compare Chinese 沙 (OC *sraːl, *sraːls, “sand”).
Proto-Tai *zwɯəjᴬ (“sand”), whence Thai ทราย (saai), Lao ຊາຍ (sāi) and Zhuang saiz, was probably borrewed from Proto-Sino-Tibetan or one of its descendants.
