From Latin quaerere, present active infinitive of quaerō, with a change in conjugation or possibly through a Vulgar Latin root *quaerīre. Compare French quérir, Sardinian chèrri, Walloon cweri, Italian chiedere, Romanian cere, Spanish querer.
