From Proto-Indo-European *h₃rinéHti (“move”) (whence *rinja), from *h₃reyH-. Etymologically identical with Illyrian *ῥίνος άχλύς (Illyrian *rhinos (“fog, mist”)) and Messapic ῥινός (“fog, mist, cloud”).
