Etymology

Perhaps from Proto-Albanian *a(k)škā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱs- (axis).[1]

Alternatively, a borrowing from Vulgar Latin *ascla, from Latin assula.[2][3] Compare Romanian așchie.
