Noun

image map (plural image maps)

  1. (Internet) An image on a web page that is divided into shaped portions, each of which has an associated hyperlink.
    • 1997, Andrew Bryce Shafran, Creating Your Own Web Pages (page 162)
Once you have a good idea of how to divide your image map, you're ready to move to the next step, adding the necessary HTML tags to your Web page.
    • 2004, Emily A. Vander Veer, Doug Lowe, Eric J. Ray, Creating Web Pages All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies
Keep in mind that some people choose not to (or cannot) view images, so image maps alone won't always work for navigation. Be sure to include text-based links to supplement your image map.
  2. (cartography) An orthophotomap.
