From Middle Persian [script needed] (lytn /⁠rīdan⁠/, to defecate) (root [script needed] (ld- /⁠riy-⁠/)), from Old Persian, from Proto-Iranian *HriHyátī (to defecate), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HriHyáti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃riH-yé-ti (to flow).[1] Cognate with Northern Kurdish rîtin, Sanskrit रीयते (rī́yate, to flow).
