From Dutch lamp (lamp), from Middle Dutch lampe, from Old French lampe, from Latin lampas (lamp; torch; lantern), from Ancient Greek λαμπάς (lampás, torch; lamp), from λάμπω (lámpō, shine), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (glow). Cognate with Japanese ランプ (ranpu, lamp). Doublet of lampion.
