Learned borrowing from Middle Armenian գոս (gos), from Persian کوس (kōs). Standard Eastern Armenian [ɡɔs] is a spelling pronunciation.

From Persian کوس (kōs).

Not connected with գուսան (gusan), despite Bailey 1934. It should be borne in mind that Middle Armenian գ (g) represents here /kʰ/.
