From Middle Dutch pijler, pijlre, from Vulgar Latin *pīlāre, either directly or via Middle Low German piler. Doublet of pilaar, which is a later borrowing from Lua error in Module:parameters at line 360: Parameter 1 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "ML" is not valid.
