French

Etymology

Learned borrowing from Latin redigere.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ʁe.di.ʒe/
  • audio:(file)

Verb

rédiger

  1. (transitive) to review and correct for mistakes in content, layout and style
  2. (transitive) to compose

Conjugation

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written rédige- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.

Descendants

  • German: redigieren
