Etymology

From Proto-West Germanic *staigri, from Proto-Germanic *staigriz (stair, step, scaffolding), from *staigijaną (to cause [one] to ascend), causative of *stīganą (to rise, ascend). Akin to Dutch steiger (stair), Dutch Low Saxon steiger (landing).
