From Proto-Semitic *ʾiṣbaʿ-. Akin to Hebrew אצבע, Aramaic אֶצְבְּעָא (ʾeṣbəʿā), Classical Syriac ܨܒܥܐ (ṣeḇʿā), Tigrinya ኣጻብዕ (ʾaṣabʿ), Coptic ⲧⲏⲃ (tēb), Ugaritic 𐎜𐎕𐎁𐎓 (ủṣbʿ), Egyptian ḏbꜥ.
