From Ancient Greek Παλαιστίνη (Palaistínē), likely folk etymology based on adaptation of Hebrew פְּלֶשֶׁת (p'léshet, “Philistia, land of the Philistines”) to παλαιστής (palaistḗs, “wrestler”); compare the similar folk etymology in Ἱερουσᾱλήμ (Hierousālḗm, “Jerusalem”), adapted to the word ἱερός (hierós, “holy”).
