Latin

Pronunciation

Etymology 1

From Ancient Greek Παλαιστίνη (Palaistínē), likely folk etymology based on adaptation of Hebrew פְּלֶשֶׁת (p'léshet, Philistia, land of the Philistines) to παλαιστής (palaistḗs, wrestler); compare the similar folk etymology in Ἱερουσᾱλήμ (Hierousālḗm, Jerusalem), adapted to the word ἱερός (hierós, holy).
