Doublet of cylindre.

From Middle French calende, calandre. Trésor de la langue française informatisé proposes a dialectal form of charançon as the origin, but other sources derive this group of cognates (including Dutch kalander) from Ancient Greek κύλινδρος (kúlindros, cylinder) through Latin.
