  1. (military) a military rank for a field officer above that of colonel and below the general ranks or flag ranks

Usage notes

This rank may be equivalent to a colonel, and given an O6 grade according to the NATO scale, though outranking any colonel not a senior colonel.

This rank may be equivalent to a brigadier, and given an O7 grade according to the NATO scale.

This rank may be equivalent to the lowest ranking grade of general officer or flag officer, and is accorded an equivalency to the O7 grade according to the NATO scale.

The naval equivalent to this rank is senior captain, fleet captain, or non-flag commodore
