From Proto-Indo-Aryan *sasás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *sasás (corn, herb, fruit, plant), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)h₁es- (harvest, crop, fruit), from the root *seh₁- (to sow). Cognate with Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬵𐬌𐬌𐬀 (hahiia), Proto-Celtic *sasyos (barley), Latin sēmen (seed), English seed, sow. Related to सस्य (sasyá).
